French Film Festival at 20

Time to head out to the cinemas as the French Film Festival will be running from June 3 to 9, 2015 in two venues simultaneously -- at the Greenbelt 3 cinemas in Makati City and at the Bonifacio High Street cinemas in Taguig.

The 2015 French Film Festival celebrates two decades of bringing critically-acclaimed and blockbuster films to the Philippine audience, not only promoting the French culture but lending support to the local movie industry by screening classic and contemporary Philippine films. It is also worthy to note that for years, the French government, through its embassy, has assisted local filmmakers in bringing their films to France and has supported initiatives to preserve Philippine film heritage.

To commemorate the 2oth year of the French Film Festival, two films will be screened at the red carpet opening night on June 3 at Greenbelt.   The opening French film, La Famille Bélier (The Bélier Family), tells the story of a provincial deaf-mute family that must deal with the desire of their daughter to study music in Paris.  On the same night, Taklub, Brillante Mendoza’s latest film and the only Philippine entry to the Un Certain Regard section of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, will be premiering at the festival’s red carpet opening night.

Here are the screening schedules in Greenbelt 3 and Bonifacio High Street cinemas (click to enlarge):

I had a great time watching the participating films in last year's French Film Festival that's why I am eagerly anticipating this year's run!

Tickets for each screening are priced at P100.00 to cover the operational costs of the cinema. Tickets are available at the box office or through www.sureseats.com

17th Edition French Film Festival

I love French wine and cheese!  French films? These I have to see as June 7 marked the opening of the 17th edition of the annual French Film Festival.  Dubbed Citi-Rustan's French Film Festival, it is part of the French cultural program, Francophil, organized by the Embassy of France to the Philippines and the Alliance Francaise de Manille.

The film festival opened with Michael Hazanavicius' Oscar Award-winning film, "The Artist", which is very appropriate as it pays tribute to the beginnings of cinema.  Furthermore, a selection of contemporary French films will be shown throughout the festival through the efforts of the Institut Francais and the Philippine distributor, Pioneer Films.

Among the films chosen as part of the Citi-Rustan's French Film Festival are Filipino films that have been shown in festivals in France or whose directors have participated in French workshops or seminars -- "Busong" by Auraeus Solito, "Manila" by Raya Martin and Adolfo Alix, Jr., "Bakal Boys" by Ralstom Jover, and the short films "Little" and "Au Revoir Philippe" by Sigrid Bernardo.  These Filipino films will be shown the whole day of June 12 as a tribute to Philippines' Independence Day.  The festival will also showcase Brillante Mendoza's "Captive," a Franco-German-Filipino co-production, starring French actress Isabelle Huppert.  However, the screening is by-invitation only and organized by Star Cinema.

The French Film Festival is from June 8 to 17 at the Shang Cineplex of the Shangri-La Plaza and from June 21 to 23 at the Ayala Center Cebu, made possible by the ample support of Citibank and Rustan's, and the following partners Shangri-La Plaza, Total, Air France-KLM, Pernod Ricard Philippines, Mandarin Oriental Manila, Pioneer Films, Le Cellier Wines, Cultural Center of the Philippines, UP Film Institute and official media partners BusinessWorld, Highlife, Travel, Radio High 105.9 and Spot.ph.

For inquiries, please call 0915-3135891 or email at frenchfilmfest@gmail.com.

Love, Loss and What I Wore for 2012

Why do women shop? What is it with women and fashion? The answer is simple and very visible: each milestone in every woman’s life is filled with different emotions that are matched with memorable fashion choices. Behind each halter top, faded pair of jeans, cocktail dress, painful set of stilettos, and designer handbag is a story to tell.

The sensational Off-Broadway show, Love, Loss, and What I Wore, written by sisters Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle) and Delia Ephron (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Hanging Up), vividly recounts a selection of comic and heartwarming stories from various women who remember key moments in their lives through the clothes they wore. The show is based on the bestselling book by Ilene Beckerman, and has featured notable actresses such as Jane Lynch (Glee), Rosie O’Donnell, Brooke Shields (Blue Lagoon, Grease), Betty White (Golden Girls), Rita Wilson, Nikki Blonsky (Hairspray), Fran Drescher (The Nanny), Jamie Lynn Siegler (The Sopranos and Entourage), Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls), Alicia Silverstone (Clueless), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Kathy Najimy (Sister Act movie series), Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked), to name just a few.

Since its debut in 2009 at New York’s Westside Theater, Love, Loss and What I Wore has garnered praises from critics and delighted audience members who saw themselves or someone they knew in each funny and poignant tale. The show won the 2010 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience as well as the 2010 Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite New Off-Broadway Play. It has since then been staged in Los Angeles, Toronto, Brazil, Germany, Australia, and Paris.

Once again, it’s the Filipina’s turn to be charmed and moved by these tales of life and fashion as CTE Productions brings the acclaimed off-Broadway hit to Manila, for the second time, with some of the best female artists in the scene today.

Love, Loss, and What I Wore includes theater luminary and current Associate Artistic Director of Repertory Philippines, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo; veteran theater actress, writer, and emerging director Cathy Azanza-Dy; returning stage actor Liza Infante-Robinson; thespian and music industry sensation Bituin Escalante; and acclaimed classical vocalist, theater performer, and executive director for Music Artes Philippines, Jay Valencia-Glorioso. The show is directed by the same tandem behind the hit show Defending The Caveman, Michael Williams and Cathy Azanza-Dy.

Love, Loss, and What I Wore will have a one-weekend-run-only on January 20, 21 and 22 at the RCBC Theater in Makati, Shows are at 8pm with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3:30pm. Made possible with the support of BusinessWorld, HerWord.com and RCBC Plaza.

I saw the show twice last year and I really, really recommend that you watch it, too.Tickets are available at Ticketworld at 8919999 or log on to their website. You may also call 2150788 or 09175378313 or email cteshows@gmail.com to order tickets. Php1,200 for orchestra center, Php1,000 for orchestra side and loge, and Php500 for balcony. A Memorable Eventure

This post is not about the event itself (although the photos are) but more of a recounting of the behind-the-scene adventures of organizing a big and important event (or what I like to term as eventure for event adventure). Just wanted to share, even vaguely, this kind of experience, not to brag about, but to learn from.

Host Issa Litton and BW president Anthony Cuaycong
talking about the countdown to the silver anniversary

BusinessWorld (BW) traditionally throws the big parties every 5-year increments of their anniversary. With that in mind, we were set on getting busy for the 25th anniversary next year in 2012. But since silver anniversaries are special, management wanted to hype it a year earlier and do a party to announce the countdown towards the 25th anniversary.

The reveal of the 25th anniversary logo

My Marcom group was tasked to put together a cocktail party for the company's friends and clients with barely a month from the date of the company anniversary and it wasn't until a week after that the venue has been fully secured. What ensued after are days filled with coordinating with the venue's events team plus the F&B people through phone, sms, emails and face-to-face meetings.

Ceremonial toast led by BW officers and board members,
with vice chairman Cesar Virata

Resorts World Manila (RWM) became my alternative work place, together with a staff of mine, as we discussed details for BusinessWorld's 24th anniversary party. Met with the events group, the theater group plus the tech group to give our requirements and also to know the restrictions of the venue. I can say that it was a breeze working with the RWM people because they are all professional and really made us feel that we are in good hands.

Clem Castro of Camerawalls rendered acoustic songs

The main venue was the 3rd floor Vestibule of the Newport Theater while the cozier 2nd floor Vestibule was to be the reception hall for guest registration and the photo wall. We were told that all they have was a simple wooden platform for a stage, basic sound system and lights. That had me worried because we had to stage a party good enough for the VIPs attending, without creating a big dent in the company's pocket. Maybe the guests can just focus on the delectable food that RWM will prepare for us.

The Company made the guests sing along and dance

Come ingress day, I was delighted to see the stage set-up. the plain platform I expected was instead a classy see-through acrylic stage that lights up beautifully. OMG! The guys in-charge surprised me to tears (well, almost to tears). Now, all we needed were the balloon pillars we ordered and the extra stage sound monitors we rented then we are good to go...for the main venue, that is.

A well-attended event despite the far venue and stormy weather

At the reception area, staff were propped down on the carpet with their hands busy cutting paper and tape, and piecing together a simple photo exhibit depicted "a day in a newspaper publishing company." At least, the RWM events team took care of installing the photo wall tarp on the steel frame...the minute they found out where the frame was relocated because it was used for another event. News of the frame's disappearance earlier that afternoon almost gave me a heart attack but since my blood pressure and heart is good, I got a terrible migraine attack instead which lasted until the party started. And I almost went to the event dressed as I was during ingress because I no longer had the energy to dress up for the occasion. I thank my joyful sparing partner for the event for pushing me to relax and take an energizing shower and prepare for the party.

Colorful musical excerpt of Repertory Philippines' Seussical
(currently showing at Onstage Greenbelt until Dec. 2011)

So the purpose of the gathering was to start the countdown to the silver anniversary, now what will we do for the programme? Where to source the entertainment? What else can we offer the more than 600 invited guests who will be coming from areas far from RWM? Its a good thing we have cultivated deep partnerships with the entertainment industry in terms of theater and music. With my able team, who did not give up on the follow-ups, we were able to invite artists who provided great entertainment for the night.

Saxophonist Michael Young from Manila Chamber Orchestra

Of course, my team did not accomplish the feat on our own. On the event night itself, the NTM group took charge of the programme implementation and tech stuff, and did a soft launch of BusinessWorld's mobile application; the creative group also pitched in for areas where art requirements were needed; the advertising group took care of the invitations, RSVPs and the event registration; and management and editorial supported the event.

Thanks to Resorts World Manila and our partners Lilystars Records, Viva Entertainment, Repertory Philippines and Manila Chamber Orchestra Foundation that the event was a success and everyone was happy. We are the happier bunch to see that the efforts paid off nicely. Now on to the next eventure as we prepare for the big 2-5 for 2012.

Although a majority of companies (and individuals) are still into traditional media when it comes to promoting their products and services, it can no longer be denied that online is the wave of the (near) future. Specially here in the Philippines, where we currently rank among the top 10 countries (according to checkfacebook.com) based on the number of FB users worldwide, more and more businesses are establishing their online presence either for branding purposes or for sales. But the efforts must not end there.

Beyond having a presence in Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites, is the need to engage your customers to make them loyal fans and to provide not just information but customer experience through co-creation. How do you build your business using social network marketing? How do you also turn your passion into a business through the powerful world of blogging and make people seek you out from amongst the clutter?

BusinessWorld, in cooperation with Mansmith & Fielders, Inc., presents Marketing Rescue on Friday, September 2, 2011, 1 to 5 pm (registration starts at 12 noon), at the Topaz Room of the Penthouse of Midas Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, Manila. Featuring the topic "Using Digital Marketing and Inbound Marketing to Grow Your Business," the event will have as speakers the CEO of MRM Digital Worldwide and Mansmith Chief e-Marketing Strategist Donald Lim and Director, Mansmith and Fielders Inc. and known blogger (www.triciawillgoplaces.tumblr.com) Tricia Gosingtian.

This is a FREE marketing consultancy seminar wherein the attendees get to raise/ask marketing concerns regarding the companies they represent. How does this work? To reserve your FREE seat, just email your name, company, position and contact details to marcom@bworld.com.phwith the subject RESERVE ME A SEAT AT THE MARKETING RESCUE FORUM, on or before August 31. Also include in the registration your most pressing marketing related problem.
